diy: leather pendant

This short and sweet post over at OutsaPop Trashion was a good kick in the pants for me.  DIY has lately become widely seen as a “movement” and a serious form of fun and self-expression, and that's great, obvs.  But, more than that, it can also really empower us to reduce consumption in so many aspects of our lives, major and minor.  Not to get preachy or anything (eh, too late).  In any case, there’s so much good crafting material out there that doesn’t require any new production, and it’s extra satisfying to repurpose it to make something that we'll use and love.

I knocked out this simple pendant while sidetracked from crafting a late-to-the-party leather collar (soon to be blogged).  This is a nice little project for using up scrap leather (here, from a thrifted leather skirt), and it just takes a few minutes.

Materials:
- A piece of scrap leather, several inches long
- Xacto knife or sharp scissors
- Chain necklace

1. Cut out three strips of leather.  The pieces I cut were about 5 inches long and about ¼ inch wide.  Cut the ends at an angle and/or vary the length of each piece slightly if you like.

2.  Cut another strip of leather, which will be used to tie the other pieces together.  Mine was about 1/8 inch wide and 7 inches long.

3. Take each of the wide strips and fold them in half (with the “raw” side in).  Lay them alongside each other, the folded ends lined up, on top of the thin strip.  Wrap the ends of the thin strip around the bundle several times, and knot once or twice.

4. Make sure you tie the ends securely, leaving just a bit of room so that you can slide the wrapped leather up and down a little.  String your chain through the three loops, adjusting the size of the loopholes as needed, and you're done.

So many leather-scrap projects on the brain these days, so check back for more soon.  I'm not gonna lie - that leather skirt is a game-changer!   If you’re struck by any inspiration for leather projects, please share!

  1. cute! and I hear you about reducing consumption. I cringe when I think about how dropping a lot of money on new materials to DIY is not that far off from buying something new ready-made. It's something I'm trying to work on too. I really appreciate your insight!
